Scholarship Description:

Professor Bian Zhaoxiang

Currently serves as the Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development) at Hong Kong Baptist University. He has previously held positions as Professor of Clinical Research in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Head of the Clinical Division, and Director of the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinical Study Centre. Professor Bian has dedicated his research to the clinical and basic studies of integrated Western and Chinese medicine for digestive diseases, evidence-based methodologies in Chinese medicine, and new drug development. He has published over 350 papers, authored 4 books, co-authored 6 books, and filed more than 80 patents in China and the U.S., with 8 U.S. patents and 20 Chinese patents granted. He also serves as associate editor for journals such as JEP, Trials, and Chinese Medicine. His primary research areas include:

  • Basic research on visceral hypersensitivity and gastrointestinal motility disorders related to depression
  • The relationship between psychological stress and colorectal cancer
  • Clinical trials of Chinese medicine for digestive diseases, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, functional constipation, and colorectal cancer
  • New drug development based on herbal medicine and its active components for digestive diseases

Dr. Lixiang Zhai

Currently an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Chinese Herbal Medicine Drug Development at Hong Kong Baptist University. His main research focus is on the interactions between the host and gut microbiota, as well as the clinical translation of Chinese medicine for treating gastrointestinal diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. In recent years, he has published a series of articles in prestigious journals, including Cell Host & Microbe, Nature Metabolism, Nature Communications, and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

 Available Subjects:

  • Investigate the role of gut microbiota in the development of non-communicable diseases, including functional gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic diseases, and aging.
  • Research on the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic diseases, and aging-related diseases using traditional Chinese medicine.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Background in pharmacy or traditional Chinese medicine.
  • Background or extensive lab experience in pharmacology, pharmaceutics, instrumental analysis, or cell biology.
  • Background in microbiology.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent English proficiency. Preference for candidates with experience in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Strong teamwork spirit, good communication skills, and a sense of responsibility and ambition.
