Scholarship Description:
The Center for Artificial Intelligence in Drug Discovery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio is seeking PhD candidates and post-docs to contribute to our core research focused on drug discovery, disease mechanism understanding, precision medicine and health outcomes research. The overall goal of our research aims at developing innovative artificial intelligence, natural language processing, data mining, machine learning, pattern recognition, graph theory, systems biology, knowledge representation and engineering, ontology and other computational algorithms to automatically understand genetic causes of diseases, identify candidate drugs/compounds to treat diseases, elucidate how environmental factors contribute to diseases, and conduct health outcomes research. The candidate will have an opportunity to develop independent research projects within the center and will join a vibrant research team that includes a strong partnership among biologists, clinical and computer scientists. The center sponsors H1 visa and Green card applications.
Dr. Xu earned her BS degree in Biology from Peking University, M.S in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics both from Stanford University. Dr. Xu’s research falls into two broad categories: theoretical computer algorithm development and translational biomedical research. Her research interests in computer science focus on artificial intelligence, natural language processing, machine learning, data mining, statistical learning, systems biology, and other advanced computational techniques that can create, integrate, and analyze large amounts of heterogeneous and complex biological and health data.
Her research interests in biomedical sciences include drug discovery, disease gene discovery, precision medicine, and health outcomes research. Dr. Xu has received several prestigious awards: (1) elected Fellow of American College of Medical Informatics; (2) The NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, (3) the Landon-AACR (American Association for Cancer Research) Innovator Award for Cancer Prevention Research, (4) the AMIA (American Medical Informatics Association) New Investigator award. Dr. Xu’s recent research works have been published in top-tier journals including JAMA, World Psychiatry, JAMA Oncology, JAMA Pediatrics, JAMA Network Open, Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Her research works have been included in the CDC guidelines and featured in > 1000 news around the world including New Yorker Times, NPR, ABC news, NBC news, Forbes, USA Today, Fox News and Scientific Americans.
