Scholarship Description:

The University of Rochester is a private research university located in Rochester, New York. It was founded in 1850 and is one of the world’s leading research universities (currently at #36 among national universities). The University of Rochester launched its chemical engineering program in 1915. The PhD program of UR’s Department of Chemical Engineering is now nationally ranked among the top 20, according to the most recent National Academy Review of graduate engineering programs. The department provides a vibrant learning and working environment. The city of Rochester is a high-tech powerhouse with a thriving arts scene, offering festivals, sports, and other events that students can enjoy.

The Fan lab (www.gangfanclub.com) will focus on interdisciplinary research at the interface of bioengineering, chemical engineering, and polymer chemistry to solve challenges in human health and polymer sustainability. Most recently, Dr. Gang Fan served as a postdoctoral associate at the department of chemical engineering of MIT, where he has taken inspiration from biology to improve catalytic transformations. Fan obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at UT Austin, where he harnessed the inherent activity of an electroactive microbe to control living radical polymerization. He has been the lead author of papers published in Nature ChemistryProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, and Journal of the American Chemical Society. He received numerous rewards for his work, including the finalist for “Excellence in Graduate Polymer Research” by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), in the MIT Chemical Engineering Postdoc Research Grant, and the PMSE Future Faculty Scholar Prize from the American Chemical Society (ACS).
