Scholarship Description:
Founded in 1785, the University of Georgia has a rich history, with its first president and a member of the Board of Regents participating in the drafting and signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. The University of Georgia is the largest public research university in the state of Georgia and is located in the state’s college town of Athens. As the birthplace of public higher education in the United States, the University of Georgia is also the nation’s first public university, known as the “Cradle of American Higher Education” and ranked 49th in the 2022 U.S. News University Rankings.
Wentao Li, Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) and Ph.D. Advisor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Georgia, received his Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 2014 and conducted postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Nobel Prize-winning chemist Aziz Sancar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2015 to 2020, with a focus on environmental carcinogens. His research interests include genetic damage and repair induced by environmental carcinogens.
The group will use molecular biology, bioinformatics, epigenetics, and genomics to study the biological aspects of genetic damage repair and cancer development, with a particular focus on the repair of genetic damage induced by environmental carcinogens (aflatoxins, ultraviolet light, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzo(a)pyrene from cigarette smoking, among others. ), and the ways in which gene damage induces gene mutations that can lead to related cancers (liver, skin, and other cancers). The project has been recognised by the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH K99/R00) and the University of Georgia (UGA Startup Funding).
