Scholarship Description:
Dr. Tao Liu is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Sciences at Michigan Technological University. He received his MS in Remote Sensing and Geoinformation from the State University of New York, his PhD in Spatial Informatics and MS in Statistics from the University of Florida, and did two years of postdoctoral research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US. Dr. Liu is currently the Assistant Director of the ASPRS Remote Sensing Applications Division of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing and is a reviewer for more than a dozen academic journals including Environmental Remote Sensing. He has published 20 academic books and papers in English, including 12 papers as first or corresponding author, including 5 top journals in remote sensing and 1 highly cited paper worldwide. Dr. Tao Liu’s research project is supported by the US Department of Forestry and NASA. His research interests focus on the development of advanced remote sensing digital mapping techniques combining cutting-edge artificial intelligence and remote sensing technologies, with an emphasis on remote sensing applications in agriculture, forestry, ecology and the global carbon cycle. Available Subjects:
Deep learning techniques are applied to satellite remote sensing image processing to address agricultural and environmental ecological issues, such as the impact of climate change on forest health, vegetation diversity and vegetation productivity.
Eligibility criteria:
PhD applicants should be interested in environmental issues arising from climate change, have the courage to explore uncharted territory, and have a basic understanding of computer programming, and should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a discipline such as computing, statistics, ecology, remote sensing science, etc. GRE scores are not required.
