Scholarship Description:
Dr Fan Shi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), is recruiting postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Dr Shi received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College in 2017 and was awarded the Imperial College Unwin Prize and the John Grimwade Medal of the British Society for Non-Destructive Testing. His main research interests include ultrasonic imaging inversion, high-precision material and defect characterisation, elastic wave scattering, deep learning and advanced manufacturing, with applications in advanced manufacturing NDT and structural health monitoring, and solving practical applications by exploring fundamental scientific problems. He has published a number of papers in internationally renowned journals such as Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Physical Review Applied/B, etc. The laboratory is well funded, friendly and welcomes interested students to join the team. The group has extensive academic collaborations with a number of groups in the UK and USA, and has long-standing and close industrial collaborations with the energy, oil and gas, and aerospace industries.
Full scholarships are available for PhD students, and excellent salaries are offered to Postdocs and RAs. The group provides a platform for students and postdocs to fully develop their talents and a good environment to help students in their future career planning as much as possible.

Available Subjects:
Position 1: Postdoctoral researcher
- PhD (experimental or theoretical) in mechanics, acoustics, mechanics, physics, electronics and related fields.
- A high degree of autonomy and excellent teamwork skills are required.
- Excellent writing skills in English.
- Starting date can be discussed with the supervisor.
Position 2: PhD student
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanics, acoustics, mechanics, physics, electronics, materials and related disciplines
- Pass the HKUST English Language Test (TOEFL or IELTS)
- Entry is possible in the spring or autumn of each academic year, with early entry as an RA.
