Scholarship Description:
A position is available in the laboratory of Dr Gerard Karsenty at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York City.
The goal of the laboratory is to use state-of-the-art genetic, molecular and physiological approaches to demonstrate that many pathways regulating the most classical physiological functions in mammals remain to be discovered. A further goal of the laboratory is to demonstrate that harnessing these novel regulatory pathways may help to treat degenerative diseases caused by disruption of a specific physiological process.
Our studies use bone as a model organ and focus on osteocalcin, a hormone that regulates an unusually large number of physiological processes.
Available Subjects:
- To describe novel functions of osteocalcin with particular emphasis on novel functions of osteocalcin in the brain.
- The elucidation of its signalling pathway in various organs such as the central and peripheral nervous system and peripheral organs.
- The role of osteocalcin in the influence of pregnancy on the physiology of the offspring.
- The extension of this work to the treatment of degenerative diseases.
- The exploration of novel pathways underlying bone metastasis of various cancers.
Eligibility criteria:
- To carry out these and other projects, we are looking for MDs, PhDs or MD-PhDs who are skilled in molecular and cell biology methods, biochemistry and cell culture, and who are eager to discover new biology. Experience in mouse genetics and neuroscience would be an advantage.
