Scholarship Description:

Liu’s lab research aims to understand the molecular mechanisms, including Hippo and Wnt signaling pathways in cardiomyocyte renewal and cardiac remodeling, and develop gene therapy strategies to treat heart failure. Research approaches will need to use mouse genetics, cell culture and manipulation, molecular biological and biochemical techniques such as PCR, mutagenesis, subcloning, Western blot, co-immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence et al. Studies will also need to use mass spectrometry and the 2nd generation sequencing techniques such as single-cell RNA-seq, spatial-transcriptomics and Cut&Run to identify gene changes in control and disease models, and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technology to generate specific gene knockout cell lines and mouse models.

Cincinnati Children’s, a nonprofit academic medical center established in 1883, is one of the oldest and most distinguished pediatric hospitals in the United States. The center is ranked No. 3 in the nation among Honor Roll hospitals in theU.S. News and World Report 2022-2023 Best Children’s Hospitals. The Division of Molecular Cardiovascular Biology at Cincinnati Children’s is dedicated to understanding the basic causes of pediatric heart disease. Members have been highly successful in publishing important work in first-tier journals, procuring substantial extramural support, and becoming recognized authorities in their research areas.
