Scholarship Description:

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available immediately in the laboratory of James Brooks in the Department of Urology. The project focuses on obstructive nephropathy, a common cause of renal failure in adults and children. We have used genomic approaches to define candidate biomarkers of kidney damage due to obstruction and from this work identified novel pathways active in damage. One transcript highly upregulated due to obstruction encodes for Sprr2f, a small protein enriched in cysteine and proline residues. We have demonstrated that Sprr2f protects against oxidative damage in the kidney and are now interested in understanding whether this protein could have a role in protecting against ferroptosis. Through established collaborations at Stanford, we have access to several novel therapeutics that could mitigate renal damage due to oxidative damage as well as methods and model systems to interrogate and understand how this unique cell death mechanism could contribute to obstructive nephropathy and other forms of kidney injury.
