Scholarship Description:
We offer a postdoctoral position for an urban scale climate modeller. The selected candidate will support urban-scale numerical modelling for the CROCUS project (https://crocus-urban.org/).
Argonne National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory, has an opening for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Appointee in the Environmental Sciences Division. The Postdoctoral Appointee will work with a group of scientists developing urban-scale physical, chemical, hydrological, and biospheric models as part of the CROCUS project (https://www.anl.gov/crocus). In particular, this position is responsible for the further development of WRF and similar models for urban scale LES simulations, the implementation of mitigation technologies (e.g. green roofs) in the model and the development of coupling between WRF and agent-based models.
- Contributes technical expertise through analysis and support of programmes and projects related to HPC and computational problems associated with Earth System Science and other environmental research programmes.
- Develops, evaluates and applies analytical approaches, synthesis activities and computational tools; synthesises results, prepares reports, publications and documentation.
- Expertise in developing and working with urban-scale hydrological models is desired; these models will be developed to scale on leading high performance computing platforms at ALCF and other Department of Energy computing platforms, and analysis of simulation output for urban-to-regional impacts of climate change will be conducted.

Eligibility criteria:
- Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically within 0-3 years) in geophysical science or a related field.
- Experience using high performance computational platforms, writing and modifying scientific code in Fortran/C++, Python.
- Experience understanding of process scale models of atmospheric phenomena experience in using WRF and expertise and interest in data analysis and visualization.
- Experience with numerical modeling and performing data analysis.
- Technical knowledge in using HPC systems for numerical simulations.
- Technical knowledge of Urban Scale models, WRF in particular.
- Effective, clear, and concise writing of technical papers.
- Effective oral, communication, and interaction skills with colleagues.
- Effective problem solving skills.
- Organizational skills and flexibility in coordinating a broad spectrum of activities.
- Knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, process scale models and numerical computation techniques.
- Knowledge of Urban Scale datasets and data analysis.
- Knowledge of using atmospheric observational datasets, data assimilation techniques and statistics.
- Familiarity with the use of GPU based systems for computing
