Scholarship Description:

Two postdoctoral fellow positions are available in Dr. Chen Liu’s lab at the Center for Hypothalamic Research, UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Our group studies how the nervous system regulates energy and glucose metabolism. Current research focuses on:

  1. Neural circuits that regulate appetitive behaviors to develop new therapies for obesity and diabetes.
  2. Neurodevelopment in the hypothalamus, identifying genetic deficits linked to severe, early-onset obesity in children.
  3. NIH-sponsored research on antipsychotic drug-induced metabolic syndrome, a significant issue affecting millions.

The Liu Lab offers extensive training in bench skills and excels in generating novel mouse genetic models using CRISPR, having developed over 40 lines in the past eight years.

We utilize diverse neuroscience techniques, including stereotaxic surgeries, optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulations, in vivo calcium imaging, and metabolic phenotyping analyses.

Our lab also leads the development of advanced methods for next-generation sequencing, including single-cell/nucleus multiome sequencing, CUT&RUN, and spatial transcriptomics.

Postdoctoral training emphasizes professional skill development, including scientific communication and grant writing. Fellows participate in national and international meetings, presenting their work and securing competitive fellowships, with a strong track record of research awards.

Dallas-Fort Worth is the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S., featuring a vibrant Chinese community with various grocery stores, restaurants, and cultural activities, and direct flights to major cities in China.
