Scholarship Description:
We seek to fill a postdoctoral position in the Climate Modeling Alliance (CliMA), a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and applied mathematicians, spanning MIT, Caltech, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and the Naval Postgraduate School. The postdoctoral scholar will collaborate with the oceanographers, mathematicians and software engineers to develop the ocean component of a new climate model in the Julia programming language that is flexible, easy to use, and runs on laptops, supercomputers, and GPUs. Ways the postdoctoral scholar could contribute include but are not limited to, (1) Developing, implementing, and testing parameterizations of sub grid-scale processes in the ocean that are suitable for data assimilation and machine learning approaches, including models for boundary layer turbulence, sub mesoscale processes, mesoscale eddies, and internal wave driven mixing; (2) Innovative computational studies of ocean processes controlling key climate features, such as heat uptake, changes in global ocean circulation, ocean-atmosphere coupling that leverage the unique capabilities of the CliMA model.

Eligibility criteria:
Ph.D., in applied mathematics, atmospheric or oceanic sciences, computer science, engineering, physics, statistics or a related field by the date of hire. Strong background in ocean and/or climate dynamics and some experience in ocean modelling. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills
