Scholarship Description:
Dr Fan Shi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), is recruiting postdoctoral researchers and PhD students. Dr Shi received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College in 2017 and was awarded the Imperial College Unwin Prize and the John Grimwade Medal of the British Society for Non-Destructive Testing. His main research interests include ultrasonic imaging inversion, high-precision material and defect characterisation, elastic wave scattering, deep learning and advanced manufacturing, with applications in advanced manufacturing NDT and structural health monitoring, and solving practical applications by exploring fundamental scientific problems. He has published a number of papers in internationally renowned journals such as Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Physical Review Applied/B, etc. The laboratory is well funded, friendly and welcomes interested students to join the team. The group has extensive academic collaborations with a number of groups in the UK and USA, and has long-standing and close industrial collaborations with the energy, oil and gas, and aerospace industries.
Full scholarships are available for PhD students, and excellent salaries are offered to Postdocs and RAs. The group provides a platform for students and postdocs to fully develop their talents and a good environment to help students in their future career planning as much as possible.

Available Subjects:
Two PhD students will be recruited in the following research areas
- 1) novel materials for solar fuel conversion and synthesis of high value chemicals.
- 2) Numerical simulation of multi-scale and multi-physical fields (photoelectrochemistry, hydrodynamics, material transfer, etc.) for photochemical reaction processes.
- 3) Development of experimental and engineering devices for solar energy and chemical conversion.
Eligibility criteria:
- 1) A Master’s degree in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics or a related discipline. The City University of Hong Kong admission policy requires applicants to have at least a 211 undergraduate degree (GPA > 85).
- 2) A strong background in semiconductor (photo)electrochemistry and/or photocatalysis, with a good understanding of electrochemical processes and mass transport phenomena in electrochemical systems.
- 3) A strong passion for research, hard working, independent and a team player.
- 4) Preference will be given to candidates with relevant research experience (scientific publications) in the area of interest.
- 5) Good oral and written communication skills in English (one of the following is sufficient):
- TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper-based) or 213 (computer-based) or 79 (internet-based).
- or an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall.
