- 1 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: Synthetic Cell Division
Living cells are highly complex systems made up of numerous inanimate molecular components. We do not understand how these components interact to form a living cell that sustains itself, grows and divides. the BaSyC programme is a 10-year collaborative research project that aims to understand ‘how life works’ by building an autonomous self-replicating synthetic cell from the bottom up. As a vessel, we use giant single-molecule vesicles, which are cell-sized, lipid bilayer-enclosed reaction chambers that can be observed through real-time microscopy and manipulated directly using biophysical tools. The Koenderink and Dekker labs study the process of cell division, which entails contracting the cell into a dumbbell shape and then performing neck shedding, splitting the cell into two daughter cells. Since the mechanism of shedding is still poorly understood, it remains a great challenge to achieve robust cell division in the field of synthetic cells.

Computational scattered light imaging (ComSLI) is a very promising new imaging technique capable of resolving nerve fibre pathways and their intersections with micrometer resolution. Whereas other scattering techniques use a beam of light to raster scan the tissue and measure the distribution of scattered light behind the sample, ComSLI uses an inverse setup. The whole tissue section is illuminated from many different angles and the normal transmitted light is measured, thus achieving higher resolution and requiring only standard optical components (LED light source and camera). The goal of our lab is to further develop ComSLI and develop applications beyond neuroscience.

Imaging the distribution of radiolabeled molecules using PET and SPECT scanners is key to the discovery of disease mechanisms, new drugs and diagnostic tracers. The use of radiotracers that combine predictive biomarkers with therapeutic agents – theranostic tracers – and the need for multi-tracer imaging is witnessing an impressive growth. The postdoc will be involved in a project which aims to develop a novel PET-SPECT scanner for small animals.

The position aims at designing and implementing security solutions for anomaly detection in security/trust management, zero-trust management based on network packet meta-tagging and the principle of least privilege, micro-segmentation, device access control, lateral movement prevention and multi-factor authentication. The position is supported by the European Horizon project MLSysOps. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with world-class researchers at Delft University of Technology and our industrial collaborators in Europe.

The OoC system is a microfluidic cell culture device that recreates a similar microenvironment in vivo to support the expression of the properties and functions of human tissues and organs. This microphysiological system represents a more realistic model than existing in vitro cell cultures, which should enhance pre-clinical screening of the effects of drugs and other compounds on the human body. Over the past five years, ECTM research within the NOCI consortium has introduced significant technological innovations in geometry, drive, sensing and readout of OoC. The great multidisciplinary challenge is to take OoC technology to the next level, building on the knowledge and expertise that has matured to date. This will be achieved by designing novel materials, drive and sensing solutions to stimulate and monitor the organ characteristics of wafer-level microfabrication platforms.

This postdoctoral position will involve two main tasks. The first one (0.7fte) will be working in the European project AfroSAFE. Safety systems for radical improvement of road safety in low- and middle-income African countries. The main objective of the project is to make significant progress in disseminating operational approaches to safety systems in the context of road safety work in African countries. By introducing local practitioners and policy makers to the latest knowledge and practice of road safety management based on Safe System principles, and by sharing the necessary knowledge, tools and methods to support them in improving road safety – adapted to the African context and in close cooperation with local participants. A number of European and African partners are participating in the project, including Lund University, Volvo and Autoliv in Sweden, the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, and the University of Education in Winneba, Ghana. In this project you will be involved in all work packages and work with the different partners in the project, with the main part in three work packages: road safety management and data, safety infrastructure and capacity building. Your tasks in these work packages will include: comparative analysis of road safety management control structures in the participating African and European countries, survey of formal and informal constraints to traffic safety management, review of existing road safety data, development of tools for infrastructure safety management, mapping of gaps in current road safety training activities and design of suitable training activities. Writing professional reports and scientific academic papers is also part of this task.
