Scholarship Description:

Successful candidates will work with Dr. Daniel (Dong) Wang, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), in conjunction with Dr. Curtis Huttenhower, Professor of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics at HSPH and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, on microbiome research in randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies. They will work on research projects such as discovering microbial biomarkers (e.g., species, strains, microbial gene products, and small molecule metabolites) for predicting the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s dementia; interrogating interplays between dietary intake, the gut microbiome, and chronic disease (Example project: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-01223-3). Successful candidates will work with multi’omic databases (e.g., metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metabolomics, and human genomics) in deeply phenotyped, population-based studies, such as the Nurses’ Health Study, the DIRECT-PLUS Trial, and an international consortium on the gut microbiome and cardiometabolic disease. They will gain research experience in computational biology methods, characterization of the human microbiome, and chronic disease epidemiology. Candidates are also encouraged to propose research topics of their own related to the human microbiome and chronic disease epidemiology.
