Scholarship Description:
The lab is well funded in metabolic research, particularly in thermogenic adipocyte regulation and alcoholic and nonalcoholic fatty liver diseases. Postdoctoral trainees in the lab will benefit from an exciting and cutting-edge metabolic research program and career development support including in the transition to independent positions in academic and industry.
Specifically, the lab is mechanistically investigating a novel signaling pathway mediated by acetylcholine from immune cells and CHRNA2 in subcutaneous adipose tissue (Nature Medicine 2018, 24(6):814-822; Developmental Cell, 2020, 54(1):106-116; EMBO Journal 2021, 40(24):e106061; Trends in Cell Biology, 2022, 32(6):479-489; Trends in Immunology, 2022, 43(9):718-727). Additionally, this acetylcholine-CHRNA2 circuitry also exists in the liver and plays an essential role in regulating hepatic and systemic metabolism. The University of Michigan, and the Life Sciences Institute in particular, is a hub for interdisciplinary collaborations. We work closely and productively with leaders in a variety of fields with complementary skill sets, which provides a rich intellectual environment enabling paradigm-shifting discoveries. Ann Arbor is a vibrant town with many cultural amenities.

Eligibility criteria:
- The research will involve genetic rodent models, so experience with mouse genetics and animal physiology is necessary.
- Experience in flow cytometry is not required but would be advantageous.
- Experience in the metabolic field is preferred.
- Ph.D. in a field of biomedical sciences, first-author publication(s) in high quality journals, and references from research advisors and collaborators who can speak to the candidate’s drive, passion, creativity, and rigor.
