Scholarship Description:

Dr. Xiangqun Zeng is currently a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan. She recently accepted a joint full professor position at departments of chemistry, chemical and biomedical engineering at University of Missouri Columbia starting Jan. 1, 2024. Zeng lab has many new Ph.D. and postdoc position openings. The research areas in Zeng lab are surface chemistry, electrochemistry, and analytical chemistry.  Thanks to thousands of years advancement in science, the chemistry of many elements and molecules in nature is becoming much more understood. However, there is a significant need to understand the chemistry at solid surfaces in order to manipulate and control surface reactions and physicochemical properties of the surface to realize their functions for different technical applications.  Students and postdocs at Zeng lab carry out fundamental and applied research in material and interface science. The research aims to study fundamental interfacial phenomena, particularly to understand, design and control of molecular characters at electrode surfaces for developing next generation detection technologies (i.e., novel analytical methods and techniques, chemical and biosensors).    The goal is to bridge fundamental research of interfaces of potential utility to solve important analytical challenges for environmental, health and energy applications.

 Available Subjects:

  • (1) molecular understanding of electrolyte and electrode interface properties and reactions under defined conditions in order to develop real-time sensors for ambient gases and aerosols monitoring;
  • (2) develop methods for directed assembly or synthesis of robust bio-functionalized surfaces (e.g. peptides, proteins, carbohydrates and cells) to develop next generation label free biosensors for detection of important biomarkers;
  • (3) develop new analytical methods for continuous and real-time in vivo sensing of small molecules with biological significance for implantable devices;
  • (4) develop miniaturized sensor systems that combine novel analytical methods, multi-functional electrode and/or multimodal transduction-mode and high performance miniaturized instrumentation electronics for rapid and highly parallel in situ and real-time measurements of chemical and  biological species via collaboration with engineers and application scientists.

Eligibility criteria:

  • (1) hard work,
  • (2)  innovation;
  • (3) collaboration.
  • We are actively seeking postdoctoral and Ph.D. candidates who exemplify these values at the highest level.  Students in Zeng lab will get in depth training in  both fundamental  and applied material and interface sciences. She has  assembled a large interdisciplinary research team  with collaborators in  chemistry, biology,  chemical and biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, micro/nanotechnology, and medicine etc.   Thus, students will have the opportunity to work in many collaborative research projects to get multidisciplinary training in other related disciplines at her collaborators’ labs.

Application Procedure:

If you are enthusiastic about joining our team and believe you align with our values and research goals, please submit your CV to Prof. Xiangqun Zeng via email at  [email protected] and [email protected]. We look forward to considering your application.
