Scholarship Description:
Dr. Guoyi Xu will join the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2025. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at Columbia University under Professor Harish Krishnaswamy. He earned his PhD from Cornell University in 2023, studying under Professor Edwin Kan, and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Electronic Science and Technology in 2018. His research focuses on indoor wireless sensing technologies and integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), with a long-term commitment to algorithm development and RF/mmWave system-level validation, aiming for the co-design and optimization of algorithms and hardware systems.
Research Areas (including but not limited to):
- ISAC-related technologies: system design, prototype validation, waveform design and optimization, signal processing algorithms, theoretical limit analysis, etc.
- Application scenarios: IoT, intelligent transportation, vehicular networks, and health care.
- RFID-based indoor/outdoor sensing (tracking, localization, imaging) and backscatter communication technologies.
- Application scenarios: IoT, robotics, etc.
- Application of AI/ML in ISAC signal processing.

Eligibility criteria:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electronic Information Engineering or Computer Science.
- Strong foundation in signal and system theory, electromagnetics, and analog/digital circuit theory.
- Proficient in MATLAB and one or two programming languages: Python, C/C++, or Java.
- No prior knowledge of RF/mmWave circuits or wireless communication is required, but it is a plus.
Preferred Skills:
- Extensive experience or strong interest in 2-3 of the following areas:
- RF/mmWave instruments (spectrum analyzers, signal analyzers, network analyzers, oscilloscopes, waveform generators, etc.)
- Commercial software-defined radio platforms (e.g., NI USRP)
- Commercial microprocessor platforms (e.g., Raspberry Pi, Arduino, TI Bluetooth module, FMCW eval boards)
- Commercial RFID platforms (e.g., Impinj Speedway)
- PCB design and testing, FPGA, digital design, and verification.
Language Proficiency:
- TOEFL score of 82 or above, or IELTS score of 6.5 or above.
Soft Skills:
- Strong communication skills, teamwork abilities, and motivation for research.
