Scholarship Description:

Prof S.C. Bian, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development) of Hong Kong Baptist University, Chair Professor of the Clinical Department of the School of Chinese Medicine, Director of the Centre for the Development of New Chinese Medicines, Director of the EQUATOR China Centre and Director of the Hong Kong Centre for Clinical Research in Chinese Medicine, is also Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member of a number of international journals. He is also Associate Editor and Editorial Board Member of several international journals and magazines. Prof Bian has long been involved in clinical and basic research on the integration of Chinese and Western medicine in the treatment of digestive diseases, evidence-based methodology in Chinese medicine, and new drug discovery and development. He has published more than 350 papers, 4 monographs and 6 co-edited monographs, applied for more than 80 Chinese and US patents, obtained 8 US patents and 20 Chinese patents, and served as Associate Editor of JEP, Trials, Chinese Medicine. Prof. Bian’s research interests include: basic research on visceral pain hypersensitivity and gastrointestinal dyskinesia and related depression; correlation between psychological stress and colorectal cancer; clinical trials of Chinese medicine for the treatment of digestive disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, functional constipation and rectal cancer; and research and development of new drugs based on Chinese herbal medicines and their active ingredients for the treatment of digestive disorders.

Dr Xiang Li is currently an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Innovative Drug Discovery and Development of Chinese Medicines, Hong Kong Baptist University. Dr Zhai’s research interests include host-gut microbiota interactions. Dr Zhai also focuses on translational research of Chinese medicine for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In recent years, he has published a number of articles in Cell Host & Microbe, Nature Metabolism, Nature Communications, Journal of Clinical Investigation and other journals.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Research background (one of the following is sufficient)
    (1) Background in Chinese medicine analysis, instrumental analysis, etc.
    (2) Background in pharmacology, pharmacy, cell biology, etc. or extensive laboratory experience
    (3) Microbiology background
  • Master’s degree or above;
  • passed the sixth level of English or IELTS 6 or equivalent level of English
  • strong team spirit, good communication skills, sense of responsibility and motivation; and
