Scholarship Description:

Located in the Great Lakes region of the United States and bordered by Canada to the north, Michigan offers beautiful scenery and four distinct seasons. Michigan State University is Michigan’s flagship research university, known as the “Public Ivy” and ranked 93rd in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Ranking.

The Computational Biomechanics Laboratory (hereafter referred to as the Biomechanics Laboratory) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) plans to recruit Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows in Autumn 2023/Spring 2024. Prof. Lik Chuan Lee, PI of the Biomechanics Lab, has collaborated with the California Institute for Medical Innovation, University of California, San Diego, University of California, San Francisco, University of Kentucky, Imperial College of Science and Technology, Medical College of Wisconsin, and has been awarded several national projects from the US National Institutes of Health, Heart Association, and Natural Science Foundation. His research has been published in more than 100 international journals, including Acta Biomaterialia, American Journal of Physiology and Journal of Biomechanics, and his papers have been cited more than 1700 times.

Eligibility criteria:

Students who have obtained or are about to obtain a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computational mechanics, biomechanics or mechanical engineering are welcome to apply for a PhD / students who have obtained or are about to obtain a PhD are welcome to apply for a postdoctoral position. Outstanding PhD applicants will be considered for a full scholarship. Basic eligibility requirements include:

  • Undergraduate and Master’s GPA above 3.0 or a GPA above 80
  • GRE and TOEFL scores that meet the university’s admission requirements (PhD applicants only)
  • Research experience in computational mechanics (numerical algorithms such as finite elements), material ontology simulation, biomedical image processing, machine learning, fluid-solid coupling model development, or isolated perfused rat heart experiments.
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python, C, Matlab, Fenics, etc.)
  • SCI publication experience
