The University of Texas at El Paso (utep) is one of 130 r1 research universities in the nation. utep is well funded for research and offers a wide range of scholarship opportunities for graduate students. The University of Texas at El Paso, a member of the University of Texas System, is a public, comprehensive university. It has its roots in the Texas School of Mines and Metallurgy, which was founded in 1914. Seventy-three percent of the school’s students are from Spanish-speaking areas. The university is also the only doctoral research university in the United States with a predominantly Mexican-American student body. The El Paso campus is known for its distinctive Bhutanese style of architecture. The campus sits on a hillside with a distant view of the Rio Grande, the border river, and across the river to Mexico.
