Scholarship Description:
The State University of New York at Buffalo (University at Buffalo, State University of New York, abbreviated UB), also known as the University at Buffalo or the State University of New York at Buffalo, is located in Buffalo, the second largest city in New York State, and is known as the “Public Ivy! It is located in Buffalo, the second largest city in New York State, and is known as the “Public Ivy”. The world-famous Niagara Falls are 20 minutes away by car. The school is one of the largest public flagship campuses in the U.S. It joined the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU) in 1989, becoming one of 65 industry-recognised world-class research universities in North America and the first public university in New York State to join the association. Roswell Park Institute is the first cancer treatment and research centre in the United States, and the School of Engineering was one of the first colleges in the United States to offer a major in computer science.
Based on its outstanding level of research and academic reputation, the school is classified as an exceptionally high research university by the Carnegie Foundation, and is also rated as an R1-level doctoral university, and became a physics research partner with Carnegie Mellon University in 2018. The school has produced a US president, four Nobel Prizes, five Pulitzer Prizes and three Fields Medals, several astronauts and top engineers in science and technology. Wu Dayou, the father of Chinese physics, taught there for many years; Robin Li, founder of Baidu; Zhang Rujing, founder of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC); and Zhou Ji, president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former minister of education, all graduated from the university.
In 2023, the school’s chemical engineering department was ranked 34th in the nation by U.S. News; the engineering department was ranked 53rd in the nation by U.S. News; and U.S. News ranked 89th in America’s Best Colleges.
Dr Kaihang Shi will join the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (Chemical Engineering) at the State University of New York at Buffalo as an assistant professor in autumn 2023.Previously, he was a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Randall Snurr in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University, U.S.A. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 2020 under the supervision of Prof. Keith Gubbins, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.Professor Keith Gubbins.Prior to his Ph.D., he received his B.S. degree in Polymer Materials and Engineering from the East China University of Science and Technology and has received numerous prestigious awards in recognition of his research and teaching achievements, including AIChE’s CoMSEF Graduate Student Award, the James K. Ferrell Distinguished Doctoral Candidate Award, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Team Research Award, the Linde Distinguished Assistantship Award, and the Linde Distinguished Assistantship Award, among others. Award, and the Linde Distinguished Assistant Professor Award.
Dr Shi’s group uses quantum mechanics, molecular simulation, machine learning and mathematical modelling to study molecular adsorption and transport in advanced porous materials, with the aim of accelerating the discovery and design of novel materials that can be used for energy and sustainability. The research group has extensive computational resources and software (including commercial software). The group maintains close collaborations with leading experimental and theoretical research groups in Europe, Japan and the USA.
Graduates of the Molecular Modelling group have a wide range of careers, both in academia (professors and national laboratories) and in industry. Industrial companies include traditional chemical companies (3M, Dow, DuPont, Linde, etc.), high-tech companies (Meta Research, Microsoft Research, Google, IBM, etc.) and pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, etc.).
Available Subjects:
