Scholarship Description:

The Personalized Focused Ultrasound Laboratory (pFUS) within the Engineering Department and the Department of Radiation Oncology, Division of Medical Physics in Stritch School of Medicine at the Loyola University Chicago has an opening of a postdoctoral research fellow. The candidate will conduct research and development on noninvasive and targeted methods of delivering a wide range of therapeutic and imaging agents into the brain and imaging the delivered agents upon ultrasonic intervention. The main objectives of this research group include the improvement of FUS methods for brain imaging and therapy. The appointee will participate in research projects to develop multifunctional nanoparticles and to noninvasively deliver them using FUS in preclinical neurological models such as cancer, neuromodulation, Alzheimer’s, etc. for precise brain imaging and for an effective therapy. These projects may involve some of the following activities: production of lipid/polymer-based nanoparticles; acoustic field characterization; animal experiments; ex vivo tissue studies; working in an MRI environment; and collaboration with other academic or industry groups. This position is supported by the startup package.

Available Subjects:

Biophysics, bioengineering, biomedical engineering

Eligibility criteria:

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in biophysics, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, or an associated field with a strong emphasis on nanoparticle engineering and focused ultrasound-mediated brain drug delivery.

Candidate should have considerable knowledge and experience in laboratory skills; good skills in oral and written communication in English; demonstrated ability to work independently and work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team; and contribute to an active intellectual environment.
