It is a member of the Global University Consortium, Universitas 21, the European Capital University Consortium, and the European Research University Consortium. It has produced six Nobel Prize winners and five Dutch prime ministers.

The University has seven departments: Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Business, Law, Science, Medicine and Dentistry.

The Amsterdam Business School is one of the best business schools in the Netherlands and Europe, with three of the world’s top accreditations – EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA – and only a few business schools in the world hold all three. 2023 QS World University Ranking: 58th in the world. 2022 U.S. News World University ranking: 38th in the world.

  • 1 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: X-Ray Spectroscopic Timing Modeling Software Development
  • We seek a creative scientific developer to work in a pioneering team to build and implement new tools for modeling X-ray spectral timing data of compact objects observed by existing and future missions. The project will be carried out as part of the Dutch National Institute for Astronomical Research (NOVA) support for the new X-ray spectroscopic timing mission eXTP and the EU-funded AHEAD2020 project to develop a new high-energy astrophysics infrastructure in the coming years.

  • 2 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: Quantum Optimization Algorithms
  • We are offering a two-year postdoctoral position as part of a joint research project between QuSoft and TOYOTA that is exploring the possibilities of quantum computing in research and development use cases, in particular quantum optimization as part of machine learning workflows. You will be employed at the Institute of Informatics (IvI) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), where you will be a member of QuSoft, a Dutch quantum software institute with experts in all topics of quantum computing. Together, the local institutes form a rich research ecosystem with the opportunity to work with computer scientists, physicists and mathematicians in various groups located at the Amsterdam Science Park.

  • 3 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: Theoretical Astroparticle Physics, Cosmology and Machine Learning
  • We invite you to apply for a postdoctoral research position at the GRAPPA (Gravitational Astroparticle Physics Amsterdam) Center of Excellence at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The position will start in the fall of 2023 and will last for two years (with a possible extension for another year depending on funding.) GRAPPA’s research interests include multi-messenger astrophysics, dark matter and dark energy, the early universe, gravitational waves, and strong gravity.

  • 4 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: Conversational Artificial Intelligence
  • We are a diverse research team, located at multiple universities in the Netherlands, with expertise in information retrieval, natural language processing, machine learning and customer psychology. As part of the LESSEN project, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), we will work together with industrial stakeholders to develop chat-based conversational agents for less resourced tasks, domains and scenarios. The scientific challenges of the project are (1) developing computationally and resource efficient neural architectures; (2) domain adaptation and data augmentation; and (3) security, privacy, and transparency. The postdoctoral project aims to (i) develop benchmark datasets within LESSEN and across research projects; (ii) develop a holistic, fair, accessible, reproducible, and continuous evaluation metric; and (iii) coordinate the evaluation process across LESSEN projects.

  • 5 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: General Relativistic Magnetohydrodynamics of Compact Objects
  • The goal of this project/position is to develop and implement a beyond-ideal GRMHD numerical simulation framework that incorporates both viscous and resistive MHD effects for binary neutron star merger and supernova simulations. This framework will allow us to include different sources of viscous and resistivity in our simulations and probe their observed signatures in the gravitational wave and millennium/supernova light curves. We will first implement the viscous GRMHD extension of our well-established Einstein Toolkit GRMHD solver GRHydro and follow the already established formulation. In a second step, we will work closely with nuclear physicists and quantum physicists to include detailed viscous and nuclear effects in these simulations. We will use the results of these simulations to predict the number and composition of jets and gravitational wave signatures of these events, and to assess the detectability of these signatures in current GW+EM observational data.

  • 6 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: Quantum Engineering Precision Measurements of Simple Atoms and Molecules
  • Are you a theorist looking for an opportunity to develop new theoretical and computational tools for quantum logic spectroscopy and to work closely with experiments?Arghavan Safavi-Naini’s theory group is part of the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITFA) and QuSoft at the University of Amsterdam. We work closely with QuSoft’s theory group and experiments within the Quantum Gas and Quantum Information (QGQI) cluster to develop new techniques for quantum simulation and computation. We develop computational tools and theoretical methods to study out-of-equilibrium quantum many-body systems, with applications to quantum enhanced metrology and quantum information theory.

  • 7 Postdoctoral Fellowship Position Summary/Title: International Waste Flows and Their Impact on (Un)Growth in Urban Regions
  • We are looking for postdoctoral fellows who can study the role of intercountry flows of construction waste in the (non)growth of urban regions. The postdoc will critically analyze the regulations that organize these flows and conceptualize the relationship between circular economy and de-growth in the socio-economic transformation of cities. The overall goal of the postdoc is to develop a framework that explains if and how circular economy and de-growth agendas are integrated in the sustainability strategies of cities. The analysis will focus on the flow of construction materials in Europe and its impact on the Dutch development industry.
