Scholarship Description:
Dr. Juli Bai is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at UTHealth Houston. Her research group focuses on the immune regulation and metabolic mechanisms of obesity, diabetes, metabolic-associated fatty liver (MAFL), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Recent findings have been published in journals such as Nature Metabolism, J Clin Invest, Nature Communications, PNAS, and JCI Insight. Dr. Bai’s work has received the Innovative Basic Science Award from the American Diabetes Association and funding from the NIH and other sources.
The group is currently investigating the complex interactions between immune regulation and metabolic diseases, exploring new mechanisms and regulatory pathways. Research employs various tissue-specific transgenic, knockout, and mutant mouse models, along with techniques in molecular and cellular biology, single-cell sequencing, and advanced imaging, focusing on mitochondrial dysfunction, endoplasmic reticulum stress, secreted proteins, metabolites, innate immune signaling, and immune receptor pathways in the progression of MASH and HCC.
UTHealth Houston is located in the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical research center in the U.S. and globally, adjacent to Baylor College of Medicine, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Rice University. The center offers advanced research facilities and a collaborative environment. Postdoctoral researchers can apply for university housing with shuttle service to campus. Houston, the fourth largest city in the U.S., is known for its rich culture, balanced lifestyle, diverse cuisine, and vibrant urban environment, with a strong Chinese community.
