Scholarship Description:

The Lan Kai Group (Sustainability Analysis and Innovation Lab (SAIL)) in the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University (NCSU) plans to accept two to three fully-funded Ph.D. students in the area of sustainability assessment of energy and materials in industrial systems and built environments. The group focuses on cross-disciplinary research approaches to address sustainability issues, particularly in the areas of carbon assessment, climate change mitigation, and promotion of the circular economy. The research atmosphere and environment in this group is very supportive, and career paths after graduation include teaching, research, R&D, engineering, sustainability science positions, ESG positions, consulting firms, etc. The PhD studentship includes tuition fees, a living allowance and health insurance. The admission period is Autumn 2024/Spring 2025, and all interested students are welcome to apply!

Renewable Energy and Materials for Sustainability; Carbon Footprint Assessment and Climate Change Mitigation; Industrial Ecology, Sustainability Engineering, Artificial Intelligence; Forest Carbon Sink Analysis; Green Buildings; Solid Waste Utilisation; Process Design and Simulation; Life Cycle Assessment and Techno-Economic Analysis of Emerging Technologies. Eligibility criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in chemical engineering/chemistry, materials science, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering or other related disciplines;
  • Enthusiasm for scientific research, inquisitiveness and teamwork skills;
  • Good English reading, writing and communication skills and research experience in a related field are preferred.
