  • 4 Postdoctoral fellowship position summary/title: DEM modelling of monopile penetration into scour protection layers for offshore wind installations (OPIS-1 project)
  • The current practice of constructing scour protection layers around (mono)piles for offshore wind turbine (OWT) foundations is to place rock layers in two separate operations. As a result, the installation of a Rock Dumping Vessel (RDV) for scour protection requires two visits to each wind turbine location. For cost, efficiency and logistical reasons it is advantageous to place the scour protection on the seabed in a single visit prior to installing the offshore foundation.
  • Your main objective is to explore and numerically evaluate design and operational options for optimising the pile penetration process. This requires, firstly, the development of discrete element models that capture and predict the penetration forces required to penetrate the scour protection layer. To do this, you will develop calibrated and validated DEM simulations based on the extensive experimental activities of the OPIS-1 project. Secondly, this model will also be used as an input to assess pile tip integrity while penetrating scour layers of different thicknesses and grades.
