Scholarship Description:

The laboratory PI Dr Chan Tak Mao and Professor Dr Yap Yat Hin Desmond are professors in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Hong Kong and renowned professors in the Department of Nephrology at the University of Hong Kong. The team is currently working on immune-mediated glomerular diseases, with a focus on lupus nephritis, which is an important cause of renal failure, particularly in Asia. Importantly, our team was the first to report on mycophenolate esters, our team pioneered the treatment of patients with lupus nephritis, our work elucidated the risk factors that lead to disease flares and also explored new biomarkers for monitoring disease activity. prof Yap is co-first author of the Asian guidelines for the management of lupus nephritis, published in the official journal of the Regional Society of Nephrology and Rheumatology [ Nephrology (Carlton) 2014; 19: 11-20 & Int J Rheum Dis 2013; 16: 25-36] and is the first author of many invited reviews on the pathogenesis and treatment of lupus nephritis. Our team was awarded the Hong Kong Society of Nephrology Young Investigator Award in 2009 for the study of serum immunoglobulin binding activity to human thylakoid cells in lupus nephritis.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants should have a basic medical-related laboratory manager, proficiency in cell culture, flow cytometry, PCR , preferably with experience in animal research, etc.
  • A strong interest in exploring life science issues, good English writing and communication skills, good communication and collaboration, meticulous, practical and willing to work, research interest, responsibility and motivation.
  • Applications with a desire to pursue further PhD studies are strongly encouraged.
